Asthma and COPD
Asthma and COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) are among the most common respiratory diseases.
Asthma usually comes in attacks, with breathlessness, wheezing and coughing. Symptoms are often triggered by an allergy or something in the environment.
COPD, by contrast, worsens slowly and gradually. It is characterised by a persistent cough, breathlessness, shortness of breath on exertion (for example climbing stairs) and frequent bronchitis.
Both conditions can have periods of worsening (attacks or flare-ups, known as exacerbations) that reduce quality of life and, in the long term, harm the lungs.
